"Our first stop on Wednesday morning was Snow Creek Angus, home of Connealy Black Baron. Dr. Stanley & Glenda Haag and Harold Miller gave us a tour of their Registered Angus Herd. We saw several Black Baron’s in which I would describe as moderate in frame, with adequate muscle shape and top. I would protect the bull a little on depth of rib. A number of fall yearling bulls were there and I would say the size of the scrotal looked fine to me. The heifers have a feminine look to them and have excellent udder shape and teat structure underneath them. I would use Black Baron back on 036 bred females, 004, Net Worth and all of the In Focus heifers.
Our second stop was at Moser Simmentals, where Harry & Lisa run a large set of Simmental cows, Red Angus and Angus. Harry commented that the Beiber Boone 8000 calves were his best sire group in the Red Angus. They exhibited lots of growth in a moderate birth weight package with nice rib shape and muscle. The Vision’s were a nice group of calves with moderate frame and refined bone.
The last stop on Wednesday was at Craig and Amy Good’s. They run about 120 Registered Angus Cows and displayed a fancy group of spring heifer calves sired by Rito 4L6. Craig commented on the quality of the 4L6 calves was well above average and he would be retaining a number of them in the herd. Use 4L6 back on 004s, Gridmaker, Net Worth, Predominant, Right Way, etc.
On Thursday morning our first stop was at Chris Bell and Duane McClintock’s. Chris showed us a great group of bred heifers by Right Time 24J, Architect, Great Plains and Genetics by Design. Chris really likes his Architects and 24J daughters. They were uniform and moderate in frame with great depth of rib and some width from front to rear.
We saw spring calves by Net Present Value, Emblazon 702, Vision and Frontier N13. Their cow herd has some Continental breeding in it and the Net Present Values exhibited a lot of rib and openness on a moderate frame. He really cleaned up the front ends. Chris is looking forward to retaining them in the herd. The Emblazon 702s were moderate with a little more bone and muscle shape. Chris commented that he had used Vision and N13 to put some Simmental influence back into the herd. The N13 heifers were a nice group which appears they will ratio quite well for growth.
Lazy T Ranch, Jeff Brenda manager was a gracious host again for the tour group. We were able to view a number of Net Present Value calves. Again the best phenotype heifers were out of cows with a little more bone and power. On a side note, Gordon Stucky, Circle S Angus, called me this morning and told me how pleased he is with his NPV daughters in production. He described them as moderate, deep ribbed with fancy udders. Gordon plans on using NPV extremely heavy this fall and indicated he would testify to his satisfaction of NPV.
Danielson Ranch, Duane and family showed us an excellent group of Triple J Design weaned calves. You talk about a group of heifers that caught the eye of the most critical cowmen, they were fancy with great rib shape, adequate muscle and consistent. Triple J is another bull to use back on In Focus, NPV & Retail Product progeny.
Friday morning we traveled to Green Valley Angus, Dennis and Sandra Garwood owners, Dennis showed us the April born calves of Connealy Formation. Granted these calves were young, but Formation stamped them consistently with tremendous eye appeal, moderate framed package and moderate birth weights. Formation will work extremely well back on 036 bloodlines, In Focus, etc.
